Building our hand-dyed yarn business has so many rewards. We can truly say that we love every phase of the process from picking out yarn bases, dreaming up new colors and color combinations, the manual labor of actually dyeing the yarn, to designing and of course – knitting. But sometimes the ultimate reward can be when someone else loves your product – so much so that they’re willing to use it in their latest design. It’s the best validation for all of your hard work. This past week we had the honor of having our yarn featured in Alicia Plummer’s latest shawl pattern called Old Orchard.
Old orchard is so luxurious, it just wraps around you like a hug and feels so wonderful. The shawl is a really nice blend of squishy garter trimmed with a fun and beautiful lace motif that’s highlighted by some pretty great color work!
To go along with the pattern release we’ve put together some kits for you! The pattern uses 2 skeins of our DK for the main body color and then 2 mini skeins for the color work. Playing with color can be really fun here so even though we’ve hand selected 5 different color combinations we also have the option for you to pick your own — so get creative! Kits are available now!
The summer heat has arrived and we have two hot new colors that we’re adding to our line-up! To celebrate we’re offering 20% off on our new ‘Swimsuit’ and ‘Seaside’ colorways! 20% off is valid now through June 17th! No code necessary.
Meet Swimsuit & Seaside:
And if you’re celebrating – then you need cake! And lucky for us, our dear sister Colleen has taken up a new hobby baking and decorating beautiful cakes. But most importantly, they taste phenomenal.
Isn’t it stunning? Thank you for this gorgeous work of art, Colleen. My favorite might be the little swatch… or maybe the stitch markers, they’re just too cute.
‘Old Orchard’ is a soon to be released shawl pattern by the amazing and talented Alicia Plummer. This is a knit you’ll want to bookmark because as soon as it’s released, I recommend you cast it on! I really enjoyed testing this pattern and I’m so thrilled with the finished result. The garter section went really quickly but I think my favorite parts of this knit were the lace section and the picot bind off.
I’ll admit, I’m not typically a shawl person. I enjoy knitting them, but in reality I don’t wear them all that often. But this one is different – the shape, the size, and the squishy-ness are all perfection. I was a little afraid it would look too bulky for me. I just barely break 5′ on the height chart, so larger knits can appear as though they’re consuming me but I don’t feel that way when wearing this. It’s a new favorite and now I’m totally hooked on crescent shaped shawls.
A few weeks back we made a list of 6 tips for warm weather knitting and without realizing it I was already working on a project that checked all the boxes — our very own free Spring Fling Pattern! I’m happy to say it’s finished and I’m extremely happy with the result!
I chose our Fingering weight ‘Saltmarsh’ colorway which I think is a good cool color for this time of year and it pairs really well with most other colors.
We adore Alicia Plummer and her brilliant patterns. Make sure to browse AliciaPlums on Ravelry where you’ll find many, many patterns to cast on immediately! When Alicia chose Nice & Knit yarns for her Old Orchard Shawl, we were delighted and honored to test knit this beauty.

We will let you know as soon as Old Orchard is released, you’ll love this one!!
We’re so happy to see the month of May arrive. First because it’s been a cool spring here in the Northeast. Although it doesn’t look like they’re arriving this week, we are really looking forward to warmer temps! More importantly though, we’re excited May is here because it means we’re ready to release our Spring Fling pattern which is now available on Ravelry or at niceandknit.com and it’s totally FREE!
In honor of the pattern release, I cast one on in our Fingering weight in our Saltmarsh colorway. I think it’s going to look great when worn with white, navy, or gray which pretty much describes my whole wardrobe. It’s working up really quickly and is one of those knits where you find yourself saying “just one more row”.
This pattern so easily lends itself to being modified for heavier weights and larger needles, so go digging through your stash and see what you have because this really is the perfect Spring accessory!
From now until Mother’s Day we’re offering 25% off Giftcards – plain & simple.

This time of year it’s easy to lose your knitting mojo. The weather turns warmer and we do amazing things spending our time outdoors but it usually means progress on our current WIPs slows, new projects don’t get cast on and next thing you know it you’re in a major knitting funk. Your needles feel like deadweights just to pick them up and knit a few rows, and it’s not a good feeling. So we went looking for some great spring/summer projects that you should cast on right now before you’re in the thick of it. Get some projects started that will keep your needles moving and fend off the funk.
Here’s our latest Pinterest board with all of the inspiration you need.
6 Tips for knitting this summer:
- Bring it with you. Whether you’re at the park or the beach always bring your knitting. Maybe you will only do a few stitches or a few rows, or maybe you won’t even touch it – but at least you have it just in case!
- Pick a project that doesn’t require a ton of attention. Projects with a lot of garter stitch, stockinette or a simple repetitive pattern are great because you can easily remember where you left off.
- Work with lighter weight yarns. Working on a Worsted weight afghan while sitting on the beach is making me sweat just thinking about it! Lace, Fingering, Sport and even DK are perfect for this time of year.
- Choose bright colors. Cuz color makes everything better.
- Join a KAL – Knitalongs are great for a lot of things. You can make new friends, you can be inspired, you can ask questions, you can enjoy just some friendly conversation but what I like them for the most is keeping you on track to finish a project. I highly recommend the VeryShannon #tttkal which stands for Tops, Tanks and Tees Knit along. Sign ups coming soon!
- Pick an in-season knit. Selecting a project that needs to be worn in the spring/summer might give you a little extra motivation to finish it so that you can actually wear it!
You’ve been asking, so we started dreaming, about 6 months ago we began planning — and in the past few weeks, we finally got to working! The studio has been abuzz with activity, because we’ve been little worker bees getting these skinny mini skein sets together. Creating color combinations is one of our favorite things to do so it was a ton of fun to curate color sets. We’re delighted to say that any one of these 6 color sets of our Skinny Mini skeins are now available in our shop, and what’s even better is that you can get them in any of our yarn weights!
That’s a whole lotta’ yarn to make something really great – but just in case you need a little inspiration, we created a Pinterest board filled with beautiful patterns which will look wonderful in any of our mini sets.
I’ve already cast on for one of these beauties and I can’t wait to share it with you — once I have a little progress to show!!
